Discipline is a Blessing
In English, we say, “Good medicine tastes bitter.”
In Japanese and Chinese, “良薬苦口”, or similarly, “忠言逆耳”.
Most people do not like to be disciplined. I don’t either. My mom liked to say “good medicine tastes bitter,” and I always hated hearing it. Recently I have gotten a new appreciation for it, though.
The most important kind of discipline is self discipline. Or in other words, self control. If you cannot discipline/control yourself, you cannot succeed. And if that is the case, it helps to have someone to teach you the discipline you need.
It’s important to learn that early, because that will have an effect on your entire life! Often times, I feel like I don’t have enough self discipline, and I have greatly regretted it. I could have been better if I had listened to those who scolded me when I was younger.
I know many of you like J-pop and K-Pop, and often such music groups do a lot of dancing together on stage. Their dancing is perfect… their movements are exactly the same! It is amazing to watch. Have you ever wondered how they were able to perfect their dances?
…. Hard practice and hard discipline.
Hard discipline from their instructors and hard discipline from themselves.
Discipline makes you stronger…. better… faster… smarter.
So, I say to you: Invite discipline. Accept discipline. Understand that you will be better because of it. Do not be angry when your teachers scold you. Understand it, accept it, learn from it… and have a good attitude. Remember that your teachers don’t hate you, and don’t hold a grudge.
It’s hard, I know. Good luck to you, Shin-Ai ladies.
