Earthquake in Malaysia, おはしも! – June 2026

Hello everyone,

Last Monday there was a big surprise in the morning. I was in the teachers room and all the cell phones, hundreds of them, started ringing an alert! The noise was really loud and all the teachers were worried. However, the alert was for a tsunami of 1m, and would not arrive for another three hours. That is a long time, where did it start?

It turns out that an earthquake in the Philippines had caused it. A 7.8 level earthquake shook that country. Of course, that is where the teachers for our online lessons live. I was worried about them and hoped they were ok.

Coincidentally1, one of the topics for this week’s online lesson was “Earthquakes”. In my lesson we talked about how Japanese school children learn the rule おはしも in schools. Do you remember it? Some students learned おかしも and some even learned おすしも! Whatever pattern you learned, remembering it can help you in an emergency.

Hopefully all our teachers are ok, and that this reminds us that we always need to be prepared and be ready. We don’t know when an earthquake will happen.

Have a good week!
