How to write a recipe – July 2026

Hello everyone,

Well, summer is almost here. Soon you will have some time at home. Maybe you will have to make your own breakfast or lunch if your parents are at work. Learning how to cook is an important life skill that can save you a lot of money in the future.

In our English lessons we have been looking at recipes. We write them step by step. The pattern we use is: a verb + how much food + information. Let’s take a look at one of my favorite breakfasts… French toast.

Crack / 2 eggs / into a bowl
Add / 120 ml milk / to the eggs
Add / ½ teaspoon cinnamon / to the bowl
Beat / everything / until smooth
Heat / 1 frying pan / over medium heat
Melt / 1 tablespoon butter / in the frying pan
Dip / 1 slice of bread / into the egg
Put / the soaked bread / into the frying pan
Cook / the bread / for 2–3 minutes on each side
Serve / the French toast / with syrup and butter

Using that simple pattern, we can easily make recipes and cook different things. Give it a try this summer!

PS. When I was a boy, my grandmother made French toast with black pepper rather than cinnamon. Cinnamon was too expensive at that time! But actually, the black pepper and maple syrup combination was spicy and sweet. It is a “family recipe”. Does your family have any recipe that you think is just yours?
