Morning Talk – Nov. 2022

Here is today’s morning talk, in case you missed it!

Taking Pride In Your Work

On October 18th we had our sports festival at Big Whale Stadium. Congratulations yellow team! At lunch time I went outside to get some fresh air, and I saw something interesting. I took a picture, and you can see it below:

Around the stadium “Big Whale” the green hedge (垣根) had been cut to look like the waves of the ocean.

I thought it was interesting because this was at the back of the stadium, not the front. Not many people would see this. Even so, someone took the time to design and cut the hedge to complete the image of the whale in water. I think when that person, or those people, see what they have done, they feel proud of their work.

In our H3 listening textbook, there is a question that asks: “Do you think it is more important to make a lot of money or to enjoy your job?” I don’t like this question at all. It is too simple. There are many other things we should think about when we think about work.

“Does my work let me learn new things?”

“Does my work open new opportunities?”

“Does my work make my community better?”

“Does my work help people?”

“Do I feel proud of what I accomplish (為し遂げる)?”

Of course, money is important, and it is important to enjoy what you do. But that is not the end of the story.

Whatever you decide to do, either at school or in the future, do a good job and be proud of it, even if no one else notices. That feeling is special and important.

Let us pray.
